Learn to paint and draw in a relaxed studio in Kelvinbridge, Glasgow.
I'm currently offering three short courses (in addition to 'Open Sessions'): an introduction to painting portraits using oil paint (four 2-hour sessions), an introduction to soft pastel (two 2-hours sessions), and an introduction to oil pastels (two 2-hour sessions).
The Open Sessions are unstructured although you still need to book ahead as space is limited. I can give you a set project or you can bring your own. In the main studio there are 6 easels (sit or stand), while the smaller studio has space for 4 students seated at the table, as well as one additional large standing easel. Please specify your preference after booking if you have one.
I am currently also a visiting tutor at the Barbican Art Society, London, where I teach workshops in the summer. Examples of past workshops are 'Turner and Whistler', 'Modern London', and 'Telling a Story: introducing narrative to your art'. Subject to demand, I'll offer similar workshops here in Glasgow in the coming months. (Let me know if this would be of interest.)
I use project-based learning, rather than rote learning using casts in the dry academic tradition. Learning technique is important, but I don't believe that you should be limited to what's in front of you when you make art, and I think that learning to trust your own imagination and draw from life experience is as much a part of improving your work as learning how to convincingly paint a nose or an eye.
My students range in age from aged under ten to over ninety! Whether you are a a complete beginner, a weekend hobbyist or an aspiring professional, I will do my best to work with you towards your goals.
When I teach I dip into a range of techniques that were developed over centuries, from the 'glazes' of paint that make Renaissance portraits so luminous, to the impasto techniques that give impressionist paintings their vivacity. It depends on what you are painting and what you wish to achieve.
I take a pragmatic approach to the use of technology. Working from life is great, but its often unrealistic, particularly for portraits. There are iPads in the studio onto which you can upload photos to use for reference.
My particular, personal take, on portraiture is working with expression.
I'm an artist and teacher based in Glasgow, Scotland. I teach students one-on-one and in small groups in my studio.
After leaving school I took an MA in Art History (St Andrews), an MFA in figurative painting (New York Academy of Art), and a PgDip in Art, Law and Business (Christie’s Education, London).
After this protracted education I decided that I don't actually want to be a career artist after all, or even work within the 'art world' in a gallery or auction house. I love having total creative freedom in my own work rather than an artistic brand and I also love spending much of my time sharing what I have learned through these years of education and practice with my students.
I was told I have a friendly face, and that it would be good for business. So here you go! I’m definitely flattered by the idea!
I have two friendly cats (Prince and Elton). They like to hang out in the studio and get a chin rub here and there.
I make a point of highlighting their presence in case you have an allergy or an aversion to cats. Unfortunately they are adept with door handles and born rebels so there's no possibility of keeping them out of the studio.
In the summer I'll schedule some outdoor sessions, to which Prince and Elton will not be invited.
