Weekly oil painting classes are open to anyone (age 13+) on Tuesdays between 2 - 4 pm and on Thursday between 6:30 - 8:30 pm. On Wednesday between 4:30 - 6:30 pm, there is also a teen-only class.
Every class will begin with an induction for newcomers, covering the essentials for getting started, like colour mixing and how to handle a paintbrush. Then, when everyone is set up and painting, I work with students individually, circulating the room and helping you troubleshoot and improve your technique.
You can either come with ideas in mind for what you would like to paint, or just arrive with an open mind and I can help you choose something.
Working on independent projects with feedback and direction is a great way to learn useful traditional techniques to build on your skills while working on paintings you chose to make, rather than prescribed exercises. Don’t worry if you don’t have a project in mind as there are plenty of props in the studio and image banks loaded onto the studio iPads to provide inspiration!
Spaces are limited to a maximum of 6 students. Online booking is open up to 24 hours before class start times (subject to the availability of places).
The class fee covers use of oil paint, brushes, low-VOC solvent, and refined linseed oil, as well as a sheet of A3 oil painting paper.
The core oil colours I offer are Titanium White, Cadmium Red (hue), Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow (hue), Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Umber, Viridian, and Ivory Black. Brushes are long-handled hog and synthetic sable brushes with round, flat, filbert, and bright tips.
If you are bringing your own materials, please note that only low-VOC solvents are permitted in the studio: so, no turpentine or white spirits, instead I recommend Gamsol/ Pure-Sol, Liquin or Zest-It (see Materials Guide). While turpentine and white spirits are traditional some people are particularly sensitive to the toxic effects of these high-VOC solvents so they are not suitable for group classes.
For more in-depth information on materials, please have a look at Materials Guide on the ‘Working with Oil Paint’ page.
Whether you are determined to make a habit out of weekly painting or just want to have a go at something different, you're welcome to come along and have a cup of tea or coffee and learn some of the fundamentals. Feel free to BYOB!
After the induction, I will get you seated at a workstation. At your workstation, you will find your easel, a drawing board, a palette, a brush rest, jars, clamp-on spotlight lamps, a stand or clamp to hold a tablet or phone, and a chair if you wish to work seated. Studio iPads are available to use for photo references. If you wish to use an iPad to display your own photo reference please try to email me your photograph[s] at least 24 hours ahead of class, so that we don't waste teaching time on tech issues!
There is no need to clean up at the end of the class unless you’re using your own materials, please just leave your palettes and brushes at your stations.
You can leave your work at the studio in the drying rack week-to-week/ until dry if you wish.
